Iconic and Legendary: Deep Woods Estate Reserves

Iconic and Legendary: Deep Woods Estate Reserves

Iconic and legendary.

These are the words which are used to describe the award-winning Deep Woods Reserve wines.

Over the last ten vintages, the Reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon have won a combined total of 25 Trophies and 75 Gold Medals at national and international wine shows, becoming some of the most sought-after and hard to source wines in Australia.

The Deep Woods Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s most awarded Cabernets, with the 2014 vintage winning the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy and the 2020 vintage being one of just two Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world to be crowned Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022.

Speaking about the highly awarded Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines, Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy said, “We are supremely proud at Deep Woods to be recognised as producing the ‘World’s Best Cabernet’ in this year’s Decanter wine awards. It is a true recognition of just how wonderful our unique region of Margaret River is and how committed the entire Deep Woods team is to the production of the world’s finest wines.

This wine [2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon] for me is a lovely triumph in what was an extremely difficult year in general…  A gentle reminder, if you will, that life rolls on and nature will stay its course despite the follies of human and global pandemics perhaps.

One of my favourite vintages of Reserve Cabernet – the 2020 is as good as the excellent 2012 and 2014 vintages and, perhaps in time, as good as the 2018 but likely more approachable on release than all of them. I'll be getting a few for the cellar as they are awesome - and to remind me of the great things that come from challenging times.”

The Reserve Chardonnay recently won Wine of Provenance at the Margaret River Wine Show 2022 for the 2021, 2016 and 2013 vintages. This Trophy highlights a wine of significant pedigree; a wine that speaks of its origin and consistently overdelivers on quality vintage after vintage. Not only this, but the 2021 Reserve Chardonnay also won Best of Region for Margaret River in this year’s James Halliday Australian Chardonnay & Cabernet Challenge, beating 114 other Margaret River Chardonnay wines.

Julian summarised the Reserve Chardonnay succinctly when he said, “The Deep Woods Reserve Chardonnay is one of Margaret River and Australia’s most recognised and regionally distinctive Chardonnays. It is structured and powerful, yet beguiling and sophisticated. The 2021 Reserve Chardonnay marks my tenth vintage of making this modern, house-style. It beautifully represents the strength of our Chardonnay program and has now become one of Deep Woods’ most iconic wines.”

With the recent Reserve release marking Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy’s tenth vintage at the helm of this Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay powerhouse, Julian has cemented the Deep Woods Estate name alongside the most iconic and legendary Australian wineries.
