Deep Woods Estate listed as Number One in Decanter's "Margaret River Icon Wines"

Deep Woods Estate listed as Number One in Decanter's

We are extremely honoured to have been awarded the highest and second highest Cabernet Sauvignon scores for our 2018 and 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines in a recent Decanter feature article, Margaret River Icon Wines and Top VintagesThe article can be read online here. (Please note you will need a Premium subscription to read this article.)

Based in the UK, Decanter is the world's leading wine publication, reaching over 2 million readers from 100 countries around the globe every month. To be featured so highly in an international publication is a testament to the exceptional, world-class quality of Deep Woods Estate.

Our 2018 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded the equal highest Cabernet score (alongside Cullen 2018 Diana Madeline), with 98 points. On this wine, Deep Woods Estate Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy said: "After 20 years making, living and breathing Cabernet I am happy to say that the 2018 vintage is the best I have ever experienced. This vintage of the Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet is in my opinion our best ever and will be a wine for the ages."

Our 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 97 points (equal second highest Cabernet score alongside Cullen 2010 Diana Madeline). Upon release in 2016, this wine was also awarded five trophies, including the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy for Australia’s top young red wine.

On the longevity and world-class quality of Margaret River wine, the article said: "Top-tier red Bordeaux and white Burgundy are among the world’s most expensive wine investments ... not so Margaret River in Western Australia, home to superlative Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant reds, as well as Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blends that are delicious drinking on release but which also age gracefully for 20,30 or more years. And not to mention a mere fraction of the price of their French counterparts."

Julian described his earlier career, when he worked in Bordeaux at Château Haut-Brionn and said: "I learnt a lot. I learnt that we have something very special in Margaret River, especially with Cabernet Sauvignon. We are capable of making, if not already making, some of the world’s best Cabernets."

Decanter Reviews

2018 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

98 Points

"A storming example from this 32ha estate in the Yallingup Hills in the northern reaches of Margaret River, getting its maritime influence from Geographe Bay and the Indian Ocean. A very complete wine, showing beautiful ripeness of blue and purple berries, parma violets and inky minerals backed by resolved, delicate, powdery tannins. Lots of concentration, but feels lifted and light thanks to the integrated oak (18 months in barrique) and vibrant acidity. Gorgeous!"

2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

97 Points

"Elegant yet with imposing ripeness of regal purple and inky, minerally blue fruit, it has a distinctive note of parma violets. Bright acidity and powder-fine tannins from 18 months in barrique will see it age beautifully. Delicious!"

2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Our 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was also awarded ‘Best in Show’ at the world’s most recognised wine show, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) in 2022.

This wine was the only Australian Cabernet Sauvignon to be recognised as Best in Show and one of just two Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world to be crowned Best in Show and subsequently sold out in our pre-release last year.

Awarded 97 points, the show judges also provided the following tasting note: “The world's greatest red wines often seem infused with a sense of refinement and ease when mature, no matter how dense and impenetrable they appear in youth. This hallmark of this finely crafted Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River is that, youthful as it is, it’s able to convey both density and refined ease simultaneously. In colour it's dark black-purple, and you'll find remarkable fruit concentration and closeness of texture in the mouth. Yet the aromas are warm, open and resonant, pure and unthrusting, and such is the clarity of organisation of the palate, finesse of the tannins and delicacy of that fruit that it already drinks with the serenity of a fully mature wine. Fine craftsmanship here.”
