Official Deep Woods Reserve Release for 2023

Official Deep Woods Reserve Release for 2023

We are extremely excited to bring you the highly anticipated release of the Deep Woods Estate Reserve wines for 2023.

The 2023 release includes the following wines:

The Deep Woods Reserve wines have become some of the most highly awarded and sought-after wines in Australia. In the last 10 years, the Reserve Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz have won a combined total of 29 Trophies and 86 Gold Medals – an outstanding tally for these Margaret River icon wines.

The Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay has become one of the most recognised and awarded Chardonnay wines in Western Australia and the country. In an incredible feat, the 2021 Chardonnay was crowned James Suckling's number 1 wine in Australia and number 25 in the world. Speaking on the release of this wine, Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy said:

"2022 was a truly exceptional vintage in Margaret River. The season started beautifully with a wet spring and late flowering, followed by a warm and dry season, producing wines with refined flavour, great elegance and real personality.

"The 2022 Reserve Chardonnay is a delicious, epic Margaret River Chardonnay from a truly exceptional vintage. Whilst not as tight as the 2021 vintage, the 2022 is more accessible and will perhaps offer more pleasure in the short to medium term, while retaining great cellaring potential. The palate is a triumph of power and intensity of flavour. Intense flavours of scratched lime, white nectarine and peach roll in layers across the tongue. Fine-grained oak underpins the expressive Gin Gin clone characteristics with a delicious, chewy texture drawing out the long finish."

The Deep Woods Estate Reserve Shiraz is a rare jewel in the Deep Woods Estate portfolio. On the 2022 release Julian said:

"Reserve Shiraz is a very special wine at Deep Woods and is only produced in the most exceptional years. Previous vintages have been scarce: 2016, 2018, 2020. Although I have said this before, these wines just keep getting better and better – this release might be my favourite Reserve Shiraz to date. For me, it’s everything that is good about Margaret River and Shiraz combined in the bottle!"

The Deep Woods Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s most awarded Cabernets, winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2016 and being one of just two Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world to be crowned Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards last year. Speaking on the upcoming release of the 2021 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Julian said:

"The 2021 is delicious; undeniably lighter framed than some other vintages, its medium-bodied charm shines bright. Such is the quality of our Yallingup Hills vineyards and the very special sites of Deep Woods Estate and Abbey Vale. Viva la Cabernet!"

We hope you enjoy these wines as much as we do. Shop the 2023 Reserve Release online here.

2022 Reserve Chardonnay

4x Gold Medals

"An impressive Chardonnay with notes of salted lemons, sliced pineapples, flint, seashell, raw almonds and praline. Full-bodied, layered, concentrated and so balanced, with a delicate, sleek texture and tangy, saline undertones. It is vivid and delicious. Long. Drink or hold."

- 97 Points, James Suckling 2023

2022 Reserve Shiraz

"The fruit for this wine is from the Septumus vineyard (old-vine Shiraz that was previously owned by Sandalford). 2020 was the first time that Deep Woods used this fruit resource for this wine. Larger format oak and 35% whole bunches in the ferment has wrought a wine of supple complexity and spice. The 2022 Reserve Shiraz is supple and exciting, highly aromatic and complex. In the mouth, there is salted red licorice, raspberry, red snakes, star anise and a hint of Campari/orange peel character. It matured for nine months in oak puncheons (500 liter). Bright! Exciting! The future for Margaret River Shiraz is bright, yet undetermined; the winemaking styles and site/clonal exploration is ongoing, with no fixed stylistic template as yet. Viticulture and vintage conditions also play a major role in the success of this variety in the region. We as drinkers, we wait!"

95 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate 2023

2021 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

"From the earliest plantings (in 1987) of the estate. It begins piling on points with the bright, clear colour and doesn't stop with the bouquet of blackcurrant, bay leaf and airy spices, then flowing on in elegant, medium-bodied mode to a perfectly balanced and mouth-watering finish. Something quite special in its Margaret River context."

98 Points, James Halliday, The Weekend Australian 2023
