2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is awarded ‘Best in Show’ at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards

The Deep Woods 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been awarded ‘Best in Show’ at the world’s most recognised wine show, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 2022.

The Deep Woods Estate wine was the only Australian Cabernet Sauvignon to be recognised as Best in Show and one of just two Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world to be crowned Best in Show.

Launched in 2004 and now in its 19th year, DWWA is the world’s largest and most influential global wine competition. This year’s competition saw a record number of wines judged, with 18,244 wines from 54 countries tasted by 250 of the world’s most trusted wine experts, including 41 Masters of Wine. Only 50 wines of the total 18,244 were awarded Best in Show.

The Deep Woods 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 97 points – the highest score of this year’s show and given to only a small number of top wines.

Alongside this impressive score, show judges also provided the following tasting note: “The world's greatest red wines often seem infused with a sense of refinement and ease when mature, no matter how dense and impenetrable they appear in youth. This hallmark of this finely crafted Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River is that, youthful as it is, it’s able to convey both density and refined ease simultaneously. In colour it's dark black-purple, and you'll find remarkable fruit concentration and closeness of texture in the mouth. Yet the aromas are warm, open and resonant, pure and unthrusting, and such is the clarity of organisation of the palate, finesse of the tannins and delicacy of that fruit that it already drinks with the serenity of a fully mature wine. Fine craftsmanship here.”

This success comes on the back of other domestic and international wine show wins for the Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. In the last ten years this wine has been awarded an astounding 38 Gold Medals and 17 Trophies, including the esteemed Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy and two Max Schubert Trophies.

On this incredible achievement, Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy said: “We are supremely proud of Deep Woods to be awarded ‘Best in Show’ at this year’s Decanter wine awards, making our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon the world’s best Cabernet, alongside Clos du Val of the Napa Valley. It is a true recognition of just how wonderful our unique region of Margaret River is and how committed the entire Deep Woods team is to the production of the world’s finest wines.

“This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon which I love. It’s like a lens for site quality and only in the most exceptional sites does it truly excel. The Yallingup Hills region in Margaret River is such a site – the goldilocks of grape growing if you will. Never too hot or too wet or too cold, it’s just right. With deep sandy gravels over clay and the dual maritime influence of the Indian Ocean and  Geographe Bay, Cabernet Sauvignon loves it here and the wines shine with our wonderful terroir.”

Today’s Decanter award once again highlights the outstanding calibre of the Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and recognises it as Australia’s best Cabernet Sauvignon, and the equal best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world.

A huge congratulations to Julian and the winemaking team at Deep Woods on producing another exceptional Reserve wine.
